Brief Synopsis:
Clarke, Bellamy, Wells, Octavia and the others have felt a tentative peace for about a month now. In that time, Bellarke have grown closer and Clarke is rebuilding her relationship with her parents. In that time, Wells has pretty much shut off his emotions and hid how empty he is from everyone else with fake smiles and assurances. Losing both Sasha and his father has proven too much for him, and he isn’t sure that it is something that he can come back from. Not this time. In that time, Luke and Glass have built a life together, built a home together, and Luke is back at work with his guard duties.
Bellamy hasn’t let go of his paranoia, though, and he feels like something is coming soon. He tries to talk to Clarke about his worries but she writes him off as paranoid. She’s afraid that he isn’t going to be able to recover from almost being executed by the firing squad, and Bellamy is frustrated that nobody is taking his worries seriously. He’s noticed strange things on his hunting duties and feels as if they’re all being watched. They’re coming together for what is essentially Thanksgiving when disaster indeed strikes.
The colony is attacked by strange men with shaven heads in all-white uniforms. This isn’t a random attack, either. They’ve stolen their weapons, they know who and where to strike, and they know exactly what they want. A big group of their own is taken, including Wells, Octavia, Glass, Eric, Graham and a few others. When they arrive with the group, they find themselves in a very strange situation indeed. These people seem to be part of a cult that worship the Earth, and they have set ideals for both the men and women.
The men and women are separated from the start, so none of them really know who else has even been taken. The men are immediately put through rigorous physical training, while the women are schooled on what their roles are to be: mothers. I know, it sounds so gross to me, too. What’s worse is that Glass seems to not be totally opposed to all of it, even if they did kidnap them. Glass and Octavia also meet another from the colony. Her name is Anna, and she was captured before they were with another group of lost colonists.
Bellamy and Clarke aren’t sitting idle, they’re going to get everyone back. With a group of a handful of others, they set off, tracking the wagon wheel marks to find where their friends and family were taken. They seem to be on completely different missions though. Clarke believes that it can be a peaceful retrieval and Bellamy is just out for their blood. He feels as if Clarke still doesn’t trust him after all of this time, and it begins to create a rift between them.
Wells, Eric, Graham and the other guys start to play nice and make it seem like they are willing to be indoctrinated into the program as a way to hopefully find a way out, telling the girls that they should do the same. Apparently, Glass does this all too well, because she’s appointed the Mother’s right hand woman right away. Soren, the leader and “Mother”, is so silky soft that she could con a con man out of his wallet, but Wells and the others see right through her. Unfortunately, it seems like the same can’t be 100% said of Glass, and she really flip flops between what’s right and wrong. Things are also going really wrong with Bellarke, as the rift between them continues to grow when they can’t see eye-to-eye. Paul, the guard that went along on the journey, really isn’t helping at all, and he seems to have his eye on Clarke.
Bellamy and Felix go on a recon mission, scouting the area that the cult live in, and pretty much find a back door to all of their weapons and ammo. They have a plan to bring the wall down so that they can run in and retrieve their loved ones, but Paul, Clarke and a couple of the others are against this idea, still wanting peace. Bellamy pulls a Bellamy and gets all hotheaded and is about to go rogue, so they pretty much make him a prisoner of his own people.
Clarke tries to find Bellamy and apologize but they’re both pretty acidic to each other, saying bad things just because they know that they’re the words that are going to dig the deepest, and Bellamy starts to make plans with others such as Luke to invade the camp and take the weaponry whether Clarke and Paul like it or not. When Luke and Bellamy set out to do what they have to, other things are in motion inside of the cult.
Wells and Graham are part of a recon mission, given loaded weapons, but when they arrive it’s so much worse than they could’ve expected. The “abandoned” farm was raided and those in it were killed, and when Wells and Graham realize that children lived there, Graham loses it. He attacks the “protectors” to no avail and is captured. Wells is still able to play it safe and tells the Mother that he doesn’t side with Graham, but it has horrible consequences. She says that she believes him, but he’s going to prove himself by “sacrificing” Graham once and for all.
Graham, Wells and Oak, a head protector, head out into the forest and Wells is trying to wrack his brain for ways to make this stop. However, Graham has other plans. He tells Wells that he has to kill him and save the rest of them. Wells is super-unwilling to do this to Graham, especially because he said really awful things about Graham when he could hear it, but Graham insists. When Graham can tell that Wells is not going to be able to go through with it, he pulls the trigger himself, making it seem like Wells killed him.
I kept wondering if Graham was supposed to be my Murphy and I think this proved it for me, but I’m so glad that my Murphy didn’t go down this way.
Another really awful things comes about when Glass finds out that this “Pairing Ceremony” they keep talking about is essentially like Handsmaid’s Tale and they’re going to make everyone consummate in front of them all to make a new generation. She’s finally switched back onto fighting mode and starts spreading the message that it’s time to make a break for it.
Unfortunately, people are still fighting on the outside. Luke and Bellamy get the ammo and the weapons, but while they’re on their way back Clarke has a startling and gruesome discovery: one of their own, Cooper, that went inside the compound willingly is pretty much made into a scarecrow with only his clothes and head intact. This is the last straw for all of them, with Paul trying to make a break for it and the rest of them fed the F up. Clarke and Bellamy make up (FINALLY) and it’s go time, baby.
Wells, Glass, Octavia and the others are trying their darndest to break out from the inside and aren’t expecting it when the walls start coming down from the explosives that the others have ignited. Soren, miss Mother, gets trapped in this nasty bone contraption thing and really expects Glass to just go ahead and sacrifice herself to save Soren’s sorry life, even though she’s known her for like… a tiny amount of time? Yeah right, sister, Glass is finished with drinking your Kool-Aid and she leaves Soren to be crushed in the rubble. Scuffles ensue, but ultimately everyone is reunited and then some. Wells is such a good leader that he convinces a lot of the others that they want to come back to the colony with them as well.
It isn’t easy, but they make the trip back. Once they’re there, Wells works to convince Rhodes that the others deserve a chance at a better life as well. Oh yeah, and Bellamy proposes to Clarke in such a cute way and they just deserve all the happiness because the freakin’ CW ripped it away from us and even if I absolutely hated the rest of the storyline the books you’d best believe it would be worth it for my Bellarke heart. Things really do have a happy ending, and I expected it to be worse.
My Rating:
I think I’m giving this one a 10/10. It felt way more like The 100 that I came to love. The story went a little deeper and the characters became a little more complex. But c’mon, I miss my Murphy, and Monty, and Raven, Jasper (only season 1 & 2 Jasper though), Kane, Harper, so many of them. Not Echo or Abby, though. Puke.
Devastation Rating:
9/10. Pooooor Cooper.
My Overall Take on the Series:
Okay, I said it before pretty much. But it just seemed really… surface to me? A lot of the plots, the characters, etc. I just kept waiting for more. I will say that I probably would’ve liked the books more if I hadn’t have watched the show first, and that’s why I try to avoid this.
