“I figured everyone deserved to be able to fall asleep at night. To wake up without feeling that your nightmares had left scars inside your head.”

Brief Synopsis:

The 100 begins in a time far off into the future when radiation completely destroyed Earth a long time ago and it was no longer inhabitable, so they all took to the skies and began living on space stations. Clarke Griffin has been in their version of prison, Confinement, for a little while now and knows that as soon as she hits 18 years old, she’s probably going to die. The trial is little more than a joke anymore, and most that have committed crimes are executed pretty quickly.

However, when what she believes to be her time comes, she’s told that she’s actually getting sent down to Earth with 100 other delinquents to discover it if is once again inhabitable for the rest of them. It’s a great risk, but one they’re willing to make if it means that the only people that will die are already criminals. Clarke doesn’t care much because she doesn’t have much to lose anymore: she’s already locked up, she lost her family, and the only other person that she cared about is the one that betrayed her.

There are other moving pieces here, though. You have Wells, the other person that Clarke cared about, that is the Chancellor’s son and purposefully commits a heinous crime just to be sent down to Earth with her and make sure that she’s okay, even though she may never forgive him again. You have Bellamy. He’s not a criminal, but he’s also willing to do whatever it takes to make sure one of the women being sent down to Earth is safe: his little sister, Octavia. Then you have Glass, who so isn’t willing to go down to Earth, even if her best friend Wells is. There’s also Thalia, who was Clarke’s roommate in lockup before Clarke was sent to solitary.

When Bellamy makes his desperate attempt to get on the drop ship, Glass escapes. She uses the old venting system to make her way back to the love of her life, Luke, who she pretty much ghosted before she was put in Confinement and has no idea why she’s been MIA for so long. Unfortunately, when she gets there, she discovers the unthinkable: he’s moved on.

As soon as the 100 crash land on Earth, it’s kind of chaos. The landing was not smooth and many are injured, some even succumb to their injuries pretty quickly. Almost instantly, the numbers of the 100 begin to dwindle down. Clarke and Wells fear that the deaths and injuries, the high heart rates, are making the colony believe that the Earth is still uninhabitable and won’t send anymore down to help. Clarke uses her medical training to start to patch everyone up, and ends up finding her best friend, Thalia, really hurt.

What’s worse is that the medicine box is gone and they’re not sure where it ended up. Everyone starts to work to help the group, and some are a lot more heinous than others, like Graham. He seems to just want violence. Bellamy only cares about keeping his sister safe and as soon as her sprained ankle is better, he has plans for the two of them to disappear together and make their own life, as Bellamy knows that he’ll likely be killed on site for the stunt that he pulled to get onto the drop ship.

Bellamy quickly finds out that he loves the trees and the nature and, picking up a bow and arrow, begins another hobby. He hunts and begins to bring the group back various animals. He also tells Clarke that while he was out and about, he thought he saw some debris farther off that could be the missing medicine. Clarke is desperate to find that medicine and save everyone, Thalia most of all. She agrees to go out with Bellamy the next day and try to find the missing medicine after he hunts for the morning.

While they’re out, they talk, and they get a little bit closer. When they find the medicine and Clarke is feeling quite triumphant, the two share a kiss. (REALLY, CW?! Really? 7 effing seasons and you can’t give us one Bellarke kiss and they kiss before the first book is even over. I can’t.) Wells happens to also be in the woods with Octavia at this time, and they both witness this clandestine pairing. Wells is heartbroken, but still determined to take care of Clarke.

Meanwhile, up in space, Luke agrees to let Glass stay the night before she goes back to her mom the next day. With the Chancellor down for the count thanks to Bellamy’s stunt, her mom goes to the Vice Chancellor, doing I don’t even want to begin to know what, and convinces him to pardon her daughter. Glass begins her life as a free woman but feels like it’s all pretty much for nothing with Wells on the Earth and Luke with someone else. She tries to be grateful to the Vice Chancellor and her mother and start over, but she can’t.

Better yet, she finds out that neither can Luke. He slowly begins to understand what got her locked up in the first place, which is that the one time that her and Luke had sex, she ended up pregnant. While they were trying to apprehend her due to the pregnancy, she had a fall and lost the baby. She also lied to the Chancellor and said that Luke’s roommate and friend was the father, because he was a skeavy piece of work, but only when Luke wasn’t around. This got the roommate executed, but Luke doesn’t know the actual reason why.

After a viewing party when a comet passes right by the station, everyone begins to go on lockdown and Glass’s mom tells her the truth. The air supply is seriously low and they’re willing to sacrifice everyone but the higher class people, like Glass and her mom. This means that Luke is going to die, and Glass will be damned if all of her happiness, including her brand-new fiancé, is about to be ripped from her hands once again. She sneaks back over to be with Luke, but Luke’s bestie and ex runs into them and informs Glass that she knows exactly what happened to Carter, Luke’s roommate, and if Glass doesn’t tell him then she’s going to.

Back down on Earth, Clarke is overjoyed to have the medicine and be able to save not only her best friend, but the rest of what remains of the 100. She finally gets some rest, but when she wakes up the next day, both the medicines and Octavia are missing. She finds Bellamy and lets him know, and he has some pretty harsh words for her, because he’s always blinded where Octavia is concerned. When he finds out that Octavia really IS the one that took the medicine, and she took it because she slowly became addicted while in the care center and that’s why she was actually Confined, she makes him tell everyone the truth, which gets both him and Octavia banned from the group. They agree that they’ll leave the next morning.

Thalia starts to get better and tells Clarke that she needs to make up with Wells, which whatever, I really don’t like the guy and my heart is just Bellarke trash. Clarke heeds the advice and they have a moment. Bellamy goes to watch the comet that’s streaking through the sky and when he returns he is devastated to see that the entire camp is on fire and Octavia is nowhere to be found.

Clarke races to the med tent to save Thalia from the burning plastic, but Wells absolutely refuses to let her go any farther and Clarke has to just stand there and watch the tent burn to the ground with her best friend inside it. She tells Wells that it’s something she can’t forgive and walks away from him, deciding that she’s going to leave with Bellamy to attempt to find out what happened to Octavia.

Both the groups quickly discover something, however: they’re not the only ones on Earth, and it seems as if some people never left. They’re also not too happy to have company.

My Rating:

I’m gonna go with a 6.5/10. I’m really hoping I’m not just comparing it to the show too much because I’m trying SO HARD not to, but I feel like so far the story is just lacking a little depth. We’ll see.

Devastation Rating:

7/10. The thing with Thalia alone probably could’ve given it that rating but there are a lot of things covered in the flashbacks that are just so sad.
