Brief Synopsis:
Though the first month on Earth was hard, terrifying and downright impossible at times for the 100, they grew accustomed to their way of living and have more than proven that they have what it takes to survive. However, with the arrival of the rest of the colony that was able to secure a spot on the dropships, the 100 are quickly pushed to the side and disregarded as children. This is highly frustrating, as they’re the ones that went to the wreckage sight of the dropships and saved everyone else’s asses. What’s worse is that Bellamy knows he’s in more danger than the rest of them and has to lay low.
The stupid Vice Chancellor Rhodes, which is NO Kane and the show did it a lot better IMO, takes over and starts making a bunch of announcements that are barely concealed threats. Bellamy decides that he has to take off and come back for both Octavia and Clarke later. Before he can do much to execute his plan, though, Rhodes spots him and has him shot pretty much on-site and locked away to “decide” his fate. Glass overhears him speaking with his right-hand general, though, and not only does Rhodes plan to kill Bellamy without much of a mock of a trial, he also plans to punish Luke for his insubordination by having him make the kill shot.
Glass finds Luke and lets him know the plan, and Luke absolutely refuses to hurt Bellamy that way. The two make a plan to make a run for it, and when Glass tells Clarke about the execution, she knows that she will do whatever it takes to save Bellamy’s life, even if she has been the only one running herself ragged to try and save the lives of all that were injured when they crash-landed on Earth and invaded their carefully-constructed lives.
Though Clarke has to lower her standards a bit to do it, she seduces one of the nasty guards that’s been after her for a while and secures the key to Bellamy’s locks. With help from both Wells and Sasha, they break Bellamy out of confinement and they all take off together for Sasha’s community, where she assures them they’ll be safe since she’s bringing them with her. Meanwhile, Glass and Luke also take off on their own and end up finding a tiny little cabin in the woods that they hunker down in, pretty much living a fantasy of what their life could have been for a couple of days.
Though initially Bellarke and Wells are accepted by Sasha’s people, it does not take much time at all for some of Rhodes’s soldiers to invade the compound and tell them that not giving them Bellamy is tantamount to declaring war. Unused to anyone caring about him, Bellamy is genuinely shocked that the entire community refuses to give him up and are willing to fight for a young man that they barely know. I mean, be still my poor Bellamy heart. In the book and in the show, he’s always done everything for those he loves, and even those he barely knows, and is always so shocked when people care in return. He deserves better.
The entire situation is really frustrating for Clarke, who through it all, hasn’t forgotten that her parents are also here on Earth somewhere. All she wants to do is find them, but things keep getting in the way, and she’ll be damned if she lets something happen to Bellamy after finally finding some real happiness with him. Glass and Luke also run into trouble when a group of the rogue Earthborn (I always want to call them Grounders, thanks CW) finds them and tries to attack. Luke fires his gun, which scares them off, but not before he’s injured pretty badly by one of their spears.
Though everyone in Sasha’s community agree to hunker in Mount Weather while they wait for the attack to pass, Sasha tells Wells that she has to go and find some more food for everyone and that’s she’s better off and safer if it is just her. When a lot of time passes and she hasn’t returned, they all start worry and Wells tells Max. They take off after Sasha and Wells finds her badly injured. They rush her back into Mount Weather and Clarke has to give Wells the worst news of all. Sasha isn’t going to make it, they just don’t have the time or the resources, and all they can do is make her comfortable and wait for it to happen.
Wells is heartbroken and seriously pissed off. He just lost the best thing he’s found on Earth so far and he’s ready to fight. Well, that and the fact that he’s found a real-life brother in Bellamy. Did I mention that they figured out that Jaha is father to both of them? I’m so sorry if I didn’t, a lot has been going on in these books, okay? During the battle Clarke, Bellamy and Wells are all captured and taken back to the colony, where they are informed that there will be no trial and their execution is set for sunrise.
In the midst of all of this happening, Luke’s injury to his leg is just getting worse and Glass finally decides that she has to take him back to the colony. There’s a sled in the cabin and she ties him up to it, really to pull him to safety. However, the rogue Earthborn have been waiting outside of the cabin and try to attack as soon as she walks out. She sets fire to their cabin as a distraction and books it for the water that is near the cabin, putting Luke on the boat that was so conveniently left there for years (I know, I know, too convenient, but I digress) and they’re off. Glass pulls Luke for a number of days, just trying to get him to the colony, to Clarke, to some sort of medicine so that she doesn’t lose him forever. I’m sorry, but at this point I’m getting just the tiniest bit tired of their relationships always being so dire. Just me?
When dawn comes, Bellamy is taken in front of the firing squad and Rhodes tells him that, since he’s SUCH a nice guy, he’s decided that Bellamy is the only one that’s actually going to die and Wells and Clarke get to live, but they and Octavia have to watch Bellamy die. What a sadistic freak of a man. Right before Bellamy is literally about to be gunned down in front of everyone that he knows and loves, the rogue Earthborn attack the colony, and it’s a full-on blood bath to see who is going to be left triumphant.
Bellarke and Wells throw themselves into the fray and Bellamy even has a real hero moment when he could kill Rhodes, it’s right there for the taking, and he decides to help him instead. It takes a long time, it’s a fierce battle, and a lot of numbers are lost, but the colony ends up triumphant and are even given another surprise: even more from the colony have shown up. Their dropship landed farther away and they’ve had to fight their way to them. This comes with a realization, though. Chancellor Jaha was left behind, and it is time for Wells to come to terms with the fact that he’ll never see his father again.
It's unfortunately time for Sasha’s funeral, so Bellarke and Wells make their way back to Mount Weather. When they arrive, Wells wants some time to himself and Clarke goes to the radio room to try, just one more time, so contact her parents again (she had briefly talked to them before but the connection was severed pretty quickly). While she’s attempting it, there’s footsteps outside of the room and there they are. Her parents found her, and the Griffin’s are finally reunited once again.
Sasha’s funeral is beautiful, touching, horrible and just really sad all the way around. Priya’s death and Glass losing her mom both sucked, but I think this death has certainly been the worst of all. What’s better, though, is that Rhodes seems to have seen the error of his ways and is willing to trust in the 100 more. They’re going to form a committee of sorts of the 100, the colony and the Earthborn to try and make Earth a much more peaceful place. Finally. But the story just ain’t over yet.
My Rating:
7/10. I’m still really liking these but it still feels very surface. I don’t know how to explain it but I just expected a little more from the story, I guess?
Devastation Rating:
Oooh 9/10. That’s for Sasha alone. I really didn’t want her to die and for some reason I really hadn’t seen it coming.
