We meet again!
It’s been a minute since I’ve jumped headfirst into a story full of magic, secret societies and enthralling people. When I was reading reviews for this book, someone said that it was perfect for fans of Cassandra Clare, and boy they were not wrong on that evaluation. Here we go :) Brief Synopsis: Bree Matthews receives the news that she’s been accepted to an early program on a college campus with her lifelong best friend. However, this news sparks a large fight between Bree and her mother, and then tragedy strikes. Needing desperately to get away from her hometown and all of the memories in it, Bree and her bestie, Alice, accept the invitation into this early program and venture off of their own for the first time.
Almost instantly, Bree finds out that all is not as it seems. At a party they shouldn’t be at, she witnesses a very unusual young man, assisted with a supposed-to-be vapid girl, take down a… demon? Spirit? What the heck is going on? This unusual boy, Selwyn, believes that he takes away Bree’s memories of the night. However, she doesn’t forget.
The next day she is given a peer mentor and is yet again witness to a supernatural being that should not exist. Her peer mentor? Yeah, he takes that sucker down and takes Bree into his magical world and secret society. While she’s not welcomed with open arms, a concept she is used to as a POC, she fights her way into a rightful place by Nick’s side, who she can’t deny that she is getting pretty strong feelings for.
A flashback to a memory the night that tragedy struck has Bree thinking that someone apart of this secret, magical world had something to do with what happened to her family member, which spurs her on even more, though she is beginning to see how dark and dangerous this side of the world can be.
Things only get more complicated from there, and Bree finds herself trying to figure out if she belongs in Nick’s world of lineage and strict rules, or if she trusts Selwyn, the very unusual young man, who butts heads constantly with everyone around him, using his anger and frigid personality to hide a lot of what’s going on underneath the hood.
When both Selwyn and Bree find some of the answers that they have been searching for, Bree decides she can’t take it anymore and turns her back on Nick, Selwyn and the rest of the organization.
However, finding out even more about her family, she goes back for one more evening to say goodbye. All does not go according to plan, though, and she ends up agreeing to be by Nick’s side, which sparks rage in many. Nick’s father finally reveals his true colors and tells Bree he’s the one that’s been trying to start the war and make Nick accept his heritage as King Arthur.
He tells Bree she has to leave and uses Alice against her. Agreeing, Alice and Bree escape, and Bree lays it all out, telling Alice all of the awful truth.
Much to Bree’s surprise, Alice says it’s time to fight back, and boy do they ever. I am not going to give away what happens at the end of this book, but I will tell you that the entire thing was a really great read and I am so happy that I gave it a chance. Fingers crossed for a quick sequel, here.
My rating:
8.9/10. I didn’t know how I would feel about the whole round table background to the tale, but it surprised me, and there were a lot of things about enslavement and black rights that I wasn’t expecting that really put a deeper meaning to a lot of it.
Favorite Quote(s):
“I would say that everything about you seems to defy reason as a matter of course.”
“And yet there he was, and here I am. We keep crossing paths in all the wrong ways.”
“…broken hearts strip vocabularies down to their raw bones.”
Other books I have read by this author: This is the first that I have read from Tracy Deonn, to my knowledge. But we share a name and I was enthralled with this story, so I think it’s safe to say I’m a new fan.
Check out my Goodreads (Traci Bishop) to see what I’m currently reading and to see a good chunk of the books I have already read. My Instagram can be found on the home page and I will share whenever a new post is up as well!
Until next time <3
