14 Thoughts I Had While Re-Reading Sorcerer's Stone

We meet again!

The last few months of the year always bring at least one certainty for me, and that certainty is re-reading the Harry Potter books. This is something that I do each year and I have yet to find a time that it feels monotonous. Now, I’m not here to talk about JK Rowling and what she’s been doing all over the internet for the last couple of years. I definitely do not lend her any support or praises. All I want to do here is tell you 10 thoughts that I had this time around while re-reading the first book in the series. Here we go :)

1 – Why are the Dursley’s truly just some of the most awful people on the planet? I couldn’t even stand to be in the same room as those people and someone should’ve called child protective services on their asses years ago.

2 – It’s so hard for me to know what I know about Dumbledore now and still look at him with reverence the way he’s supposed to come off to Harry in this book.

3 – I hate how alone Harry is feeling, knowing that Sirius is out there, imprisoned and falsely accused. I hate that they don’t get enough time together.

4 – It’s hard to read Harry and Ron being so separate and annoyed by Hermione before they’re friends. I know she continues to annoy them, but they just seem so mean in the beginning. Is this why people don’t like Ron? Because of an attitude he had when he was a literal 11 year old child?

5 – When Malfoy puts that leg locking jinx on Neville, I love that the Golden Trio already just comforts him and tells him he’s worth it. It’s so pure and shows that they’re such good people.

6 – I know that McGonagall isn’t one to mess with, but honestly, taking 150 points in one fell swoop for kids being out of bed at night? That just seems like too much, and she had to know what it was going to do for Harry, Hermione and Neville’s social standings.

7 – I know this point has been made a million times, but it’s so ridiculous that Dumbledore is like “the Forbidden Forest is, you know, FORBIDDEN” and then in the next breath its “We have a bunch of first-years that have detention? Let’s send them into this so-called Forbidden Forest at 11 at night.”

8 – Waiiiiit a minute. The whole “half life, a cursed life” thing that Firenze explains to Harry from drinking unicorn blood. The DADA teachers started dying/leaving each year after Quirrell and everyone said Voldemort cursed the position when he didn’t get it… but did it really happen when the unicorn blood was consumed? It WAS mostly Quirrell’s body…

9 – Okay. I know that Hogwarts is HUGE and that Salazar Slytherin was a pretty clever cookie. But when they go through the trapdoor Hermione says “we must be miles under the school” but the teachers just still… don’t know about the Chamber of Secrets? They didn’t run into it at any time? Make it make sense. Am I just forgetting something that makes it obvious?

10 – Everyone says that Quirrell is so jittery and nervous coming back from his trip because he ran into a vampire and a hag, which means he definitely wasn’t that way before.. it would be interesting to see a pre-Voldy-hanging-out-on-his-head Quirrell.

11 – Did JK get the idea for Voldy being on the back of Quirrell’s head from Edward Mordrake?

12 – Ahh, yes. I just googled it and people totally have a theory that Quirrell lived in the 19th century and was actually Mordrake back then. Got it. Now I don’t feel very original at all.

13 – God. The fact that Hagrid sent owls off to all of Lily and James’ old friends just for photos to make Harry that book. HAGRID IS A SAINT AND SHOULD BE PROTECTED AT ALL COSTS.

14 – Wow… it’s such a bummer to see how excited Harry and Ron are about him visiting Ron in the summer, knowing what’s to come. I know Dobby was doing what he thought was right, but damn.

Well, as always, that was a ride. What I love is that something catches me off guard or I notice something new every single time that I read these books. Well, off to start Chamber of Secrets.
